When Division Turns Deadly: Why Common Sense Matters More Than Ever
The recent shooting of Charlie Kirk has thrown the fragility of our public square into sharp relief. The news itself was shocking enough, but what followed online was a brutal mirror. Within minutes, timelines filled with people openly celebrating his death, others calling for revenge, and a wave of cancellations and denunciations from every corner of the political spectrum. It was less a debate and more a digital battlefield.
That’s the reality of the world we now live in. We may all be on the same airwaves, but we are clearly not hearing the same thing. What each of us consumes, what we share, and what we allow to shape us is driving us further apart. The extremes get amplified, the middle ground gets ignored, and ordinary people are left either disillusioned or radicalised.
Moments like this underline why the work we’re doing at The Common Sense Network matters. Our mission has always been to create a space where people who disagree can come together, talk honestly, and learn from one another. The events of the last week don’t discourage us; they re-energise us.
In the next few weeks, we’ll be holding an event focused directly on political violence. It will be an honest, difficult, and necessary conversation. Tickets will be limited, but they’ll be going live very soon, and we’d love you to be there.
We’re also launching free workshops on news and media literacy. These sessions will give people the tools to spot emotional manipulation, understand how narratives are framed, and navigate the information overload without losing their bearings.
To those of you who have been with us on this journey so far: thank you. Your support makes this work possible. We’re genuinely excited about the future, because even in the noise, there’s a hunger for nuance, truth, and connection. That’s what we’re building together.
