We Are At Crossroads
Good Afternoon Sensibles,
Hope this community update finds you well. Happy new year from me and the rest of the team. A lot of behind the scenes work has been going on as we reach an inflexion point in our mission here.
For those that just joined our community or those who need a small reminder, our mission here is
To make democracy more healthy by creating spaces for people who disagree to have fruitful dialogue.
When I first wrote those words years ago, I really expected the whole world to get behind me. I mean, who doesn’t want a more healthy democracy. Along the journey of leading this network for 3 years, I’ve realised a lot of things.
Some people benefit from a divided and partisan political climate. Some of you may have arrived at this conclusion sooner than me but I’m a passionate and sometimes hopeless idealist. I now know that some people will never get behind our mission simply because the status quo works for them and their profits. They aren’t motivated to push the world forward towards meaning of change and so like things the way they are.
People are tired. One of the deepest things we have had to combat over the years is a growing apathy with our demographic. News has really become noise and so people don’t know what to trust anymore, what’s true, what’s important, what’s real.
Community is rare and special. The term ‘community’ has been co-opted by organisations in recent years. It doesn’t mean anything, it’s just ‘new coms’ language that they use to talk about their customers. Most of them care more about the term than the actual community they are talking about. Nurturing a community requires openness, transparency and frankness. This is why I’m so grateful for you reading this right now. There are 100 things you could be doing with your time but you are reading this. I’m grateful for your vote of confidence and your support over the years. This year is an inflexion point in our journey and rather than telling you what’s coming up, brace yourself and get ready to see it.
