One Young World was a success // Here is what happened
We are back in the office after a week away at the One Young World summit in Manchester.
The summit was a roaring success. We saw 2000 people from over 200m countries coming together to talk about how they tackle some of the biggest problems in the world.
We hosted a panel promoting peace and social cohesion and also a workshop on how we tackle fake news. Here are some posts from the week. People were so fascinated by our work and it was good to connect with many new members of our community.
I also reflected on how it was in many ways a full-circle moment for me personally
When I first went to the summit years ago, I had just started a business with big ambitions. However, I was so uncertain and unsure of what would come of it. Fast forward 5 years and I’m partnering with One Young World, speaking, sitting on panels, and delivering workshops.
Since I first went, we have grown our community by over 30,000 people and have made so much impact, I can’t even quantify it all. It’s just amazing and humbling to think about.

It shouldn’t take a march to get justice for Chris Kaba
Whilst the decision to suspend the Met Police officer who shot and killed unarmed Chris Kaba is welcome, it shouldn’t have taken a march and a large social media campaign to get good practice from the London Met. The road to this decision was unnecessarily arduous for the family the Met is there to protect. So much stain was put on a family already dealing with grief a lot of us can only imagine. It’s unacceptable that it took the family parading their grief online to see this decision taken.

My comment: Two thousand participants? It’s just a number. A “roaring success” is not defined by how many people attend workshops, panels, networking sessions, etc. A roaring success is defined by actions that emerge from such talkfests. And in the case of Common Sense, will any actions result that will improve the lives of ordinary people instead of some interest group? If that happens, I look forward to your report in future.
