No Justice, No Peace: Derek Chauvin Verdict
Good Afternoon Sense-ibles,
The world collectively let out a sigh of relief yesterday as the results from the Derek Chauvin trail came in.
Former police officer Derek Chauvin was found guilty on all three counts: second-degree murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter.
It’s also important to note that It will be another eight weeks until Chauvin is sentenced. Until then, he will be held in jail.
To some, the verdict came as a surprise in a country where police are rarely prosecuted for custodial deaths. It has been celebrated by activists as long-awaited progress for racial justice in the US.
Some commentators think this case is a vindication of the US Justice system, I believe this argument is difficult to make. This is a moment that hopefully will be part of a much larger trajectory of change in the US justice system, a system that often does not deliver for people of colour. This one trial cannot change a system nor is it indicative of a pattern.
We need stamina and we need focus. As a news network, we will continue to put a spotlight on these issues and will keep exploring different perspectives on where we ought to go next!
For one night at least, we can cry justice!
