Its Been A Wild Year but We Made It
Good Afternoon Sense-ibles,
As we reach the end of what has been a very tumultuous year for us all, I've been reflective. I was deeply saddened to hear about the closure of yet another independent news outlet: The Correspondent, who will stop publishing 1 January 2021.
In their letter to members, they said that they were 'unable to demonstrate the value of The Correspondent’s journalism to a significant enough number of members'. Despite having members in over 140 countries, they had to close. We wish them well in the future.
This got me thinking about our family here at Common Sense. This amazing group of diverse thinkers we have built over the years. What started as an idea in my living room with friends has grown to be a well-known brand with heaps of potential.
This year started with bold expansion plans. We had planned to talk all that potential and turn it into something magical. The plan was to make the Common Sense ethos a national talking point. Following Covid, this quickly had to change so that we would survive. We had to build an MVP (minimum viable product) that could run indefinitely as we navigated what we knew would be difficult months, especially for public interest news. Here I am in the last month of this year emailing which means one thing, we made it!
From the 20th of this month, as an organisation, we are going on our annual break. During this time, our team will be planning and getting ready for a big and bold 2021 where we turn potential into reality but also we will be thinking about you!
Your support and feedback have kept us going so far. Without you, there is no Common Sense; so thank you for sticking with us. Through the difficulties and challenges you have stuck with us and we are so grateful! Thank you for inviting more people to join our family in anticipation of something great.
We are going to make you proud in 2021

Presenting Torrin, a video producer in our Optics team!
“Ummm a little bit about myself... I like to go by the title of “visual-artist”. When you are a creative of some sort it’s hard to explain what you do. But in short, I just like creating things and trying to tell stories visually.
I’m born in London but lived mostly in Coventry (unfortunately) but currently based in Manchester studying Digital media and communications.
One thing people that know me notice most is the way that I think and deep life sometimes... like isn’t it mad that the brain taught itself how to do brain surgery but no one talks about it!?
Mostly what I do online is documenting the journey of finding purpose so if that’s something you’re interested in seeing life from my lens then feel free to follow me @torrinjoshua”
We have started a new series called “Anything But Politics” hosted by our very own Jess Stoddard. In this series, Jess will be talking to fun, exciting people who usually have political campaign opinions, but she is keeping it bare and talking about their childhood, upbringing, passion and the side of them the public don't know.
You can watch the first episode here, featuring our Culture Editor who is also a Poet and Play-writer; Afshan D'Souza Lodhi.

Thank you for keeping up with the common sense updates.
