News junkies have been glued to their phones all day as reactions to Sue Gray's long-awaited report into parties at Number 10 poured in. The report’s conclusions were clear and definitive.
There was a failure of leadership at Number 10 and many of the gatherings should not have been allowed to take place.
Still, a buoyant and seemingly excited Boris Johnson took to the dispatch box at PMQs today and declared that his earlier statements to parliament had been vindicated. He said he was shocked to learn about the parties like the rest of us but defended his appearance. Boris seemed confident and ready to put this behind him.
However, an objective reading of events would not lead to this conclusion. This week’s Prime Minsters Question did not put a line under the issue, instead, it raised more questions that needed answering. In fact, in the next instalment of this never-ending saga, Johnson is set to face the Commons Privileges Committee later. The prime minister is being investigated for having potentially deliberately misled parliament in statements that he has made in the House about alleged breaches of lockdown rules in Downing Street – something that could constitute a contempt of parliament.
If he is found guilty, then the precedent is that he resigns and leaves office.
Just a few days ago we learned that legal action had been launched over Met Police’s ‘failure to investigate’ Boris Johnson over Partygate adequately. This is another sub storyline that is developing as the public tries to make sense of what’s going on.
All of this whilst the country is gripped by a cost of living crisis and with inflation at a 40 year high.
